DASH Diet Feeds a Healthier Heart
04.15.08 (9:49 pm) [edit]
|
Researchers who studied the dining habits of almost 89,000 women over a period of 24 years have concluded that those who routinely consumed a diet as close as possible to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet were at significantly less risk for coronary heart disease and stroke than the women in the study who deviated the most from the DASH dietary guidelines. The Nurses’ Health Study followed 88,517 female nurses, whose ages ranged from 34 to 59 at the beginning of the study in 1980. None of them had diabetes or cardiovascular disease at the inception of the study. They reported their typical dietary fare seven times over the course of the 24-year study, with each report reflecting their dietary habits from each previous year.

Cell Phone Use To Increased Brain Cancer
03.31.08 (9:30 pm) [edit]
Using a cell phone can be more dangerous to your health than smoking, and can significantly increase your risk of developing brain cancer. According to the study, radiation omitted from the phone during use is what is so bad for your health and according to Vini Khurana, one of Britains' top neurosurgeons using mobile phones for more than 10 years can effectively double your risk of developing the cancer. "It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking, and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation, including very young children."

When passengers book they will be able to donate to an environment trust that will fund research into alternative fuels, a tree planting project on a Hawkes Bay farm and buy emission reduction units from a Manawatu wind farm. The voluntary contributions will range from $4.50 for an Auckland-Wellington return flight, $13.70 - Christchurch to Sydney and $88.10 - Auckland to Los Angeles. Other airlines run similar schemes but Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe says his airline's plans were more tangible.

Focus on colorectal cancer targets testing for at-risk ages
03.17.08 (2:17 am) [edit]
Colorectal cancer has been known as the third leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States — and yet it is highly preventable. This month is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, so learn the facts and get tested. It could save your life.
An estimated 55,170 people died from colorectal cancer, commonly called colon cancer, in 2006. That’s a number the American Cancer Society is working to reduce. The society recommends adults aged 50 and older get tested for the disease. People with colon cancer in their families may need to start getting tested when they are younger. Both men and women are at risk, and 90 percent of cases are diagnosed in people older than 50. Many people may be afraid of getting tested — yet the test can save your life. There are several different screening tests to determine if you have any precancerous polyps, or small growths on the lining of the colon or rectum that could lead to cancer .Finding and removing polyps before they become cancerous can stop colon cancer before it starts. These tests are typically quick and are always done with your privacy in mind. Colonoscopies, for example, use a flexible tube with a video camera to allow a doctor to see inside the colon for any polyps, or growths. It the doctor finds a polyp, it can usually be removed during the test. CDC Says 61% of Americans Getting Colon Cancer Tests Boston (dbTechno) - According to a report released by the U.S. Centers for DIsease Control and Prevention, the number of older Americans who are getting colon cancer tests has risen in 2006. The number has jumped to 61% of Americans getting the test. This is a jump up from the last time figures were reported, four years ago, when the number was at 54%. Each year, around 150,000 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed in the form of these colorectal tumors. The disease kills 54,000 people each year. The CDC has been pushing over the years, for more and more Americans to get the annual colon cancer screenings. The recommendation is every five years for a fecal blood screening, and every ten years for a colonoscopy. The only reason, it seems, that Americans do not get screened, is due to them not having the money to do so, or being less educated. Those who are poverty-stricken, less educated, and lacked health insurance were in the lowest bracket to receive the test.

There are a lot of different substances we use to change the way our bodies work, not all of which we recognise as drugs. A drug is a chemical substance that causes a change in the body. This includes both prescription and non-prescription medicines, herbal medicines, alcohol, nicotine and illegal drugs. Medicines are very helpful - even lifesaving, otherwise we wouldn't use them. Medicines are drugs used to treat illness. The wise use of medicines involves you, your doctor and your pharmacist, working together to decide the best way to use medicine so it does you the most good. However, medicines taken incorrectly have the potential for great harm. If used incorrectly or unwisely, medicines can cause you problems or even harm. Prescription medicines are prescribed by your doctor or sometimes your dentist and dispensed by a pharmacist. Non-prescription medicines are either classed as Pharmacy Medicine (S2) or Pharmacist Only Medicine (S3) which are only available from pharmacies and can be recommended by your pharmacist. Risks There is a greater risk of medicines causing problems if you: - Use them other than as directed
- Are using other prescription or non-prescription medicines
- Have kidney, liver or stomach problems
- Drink alcohol
- Are allergic to any substances in the medicines.
